How do I find the information I want?
There are 2 ways to search the database currently, in the advanced search that is displayed when you click on the herbs, formulas, or points tab. Or in the Global search that is in the top right hand corner.
The database is designed to be like a web. Providing the opportunity
to look up the parts, while you are looking at the product (the whole). Anything
in Yellow that is underlined, can be clicked on, and this will take
you to another page of information. So each single herb can be
clicked on to see that individual herb. Each point can be clicked
on to see that individual point, etc.
Where is the subject search box?
In the Far Right hand corner is a white box -- this is a global search that for the time being will pull up all information for a particular subject in Herbs & Formulas. Points you can search by going to the Point button in the menu bar, which will open another search box that will allow you to search things like Action, Indication, Category, etc. There is also one of these expanded search options boxes under the Formulas & Single Herbs buttons.
So for example you could put wiry in the pulse box, red in the tongue box, and headache in the indications box -- and the various formulas or single herbs that treat that will show up. In that resulting search screen the name will be in yellow. You can click on this to get expanded information about that formula or point/ single herb. Pretty much anything in yellow is a hypermark and can be clicked on for more information.
Can You Give me some pointers on how to find what I am loooking for?
There are several ways to use the searches --
First -- Indications -- Think of indications as being the common english for any term -- this is where if you were looking for nosebleed -- you would type in nosebleed, or coughing of blood, or vomiting of blood.
Also, a good way to think about things is with the object (the Noun) that you are looking for being the first item that you type in: for example: Eye pain, with Eye being the primary thing to search for. If you are having trouble finding something always break it down to the simplest common denominators.
Second -- Western Indications -- Think of this as being the Latin equivalant to any word that might be used instead of the common english. So to look at the examples above in indications: instead of Nosebleed you would search here for Epistaxis; Coughing of Blood would be Hemoptysis, Vomiting of Blood would be Hematemesis. This is also a good place if you want information and know the exact muscle, tendon, nerve or vein that you are looking for. This is also where you would search for standard Western Diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, or Fibromyalgia.
Third -- Actions -- Simply the common actions in Chinese Medicine that address the broad picture: for example: Damp Heat, Clear Heat, Expel Wind, etc.
Can I search multiple things at once?
In the advanced search, you can search a pulse and an indication,
and a category or pulse, category and an herb (in a formula) for example. The
thing to remember is to separate the lists of things you are searching
for with a space.
My address or credit card has changed, how do I update my Account?
On the right side of the Dashboard is a User accounts link, go to
that, enter your new data, and hit save.
I want to see ????? Translation translated. Will you translate it?
Send a message to the Webmaster about the Translation you are interested
in, and we will see if we can source it. Then more then likely
we will put it on our translation schedule.
I really like the Five Elements section of the Points Table, where did you get the material?
The Five Elements material for the Acupuncture Points was provided
by Lonny Jarrett out of his Book The Clinical Practice of Chinese
Medicine. Contact http://www.spiritpathpress.com/ to
buy a copy of the book. Mr. Jarretts material is unfortunately
unavailable at this time. If you would like to see him contribute to
the CM-DB, please contact him at the above address, and tell him how
valuable his contribution would be to the database.
What are the sources for the material in the database?
-
First of all are the translations themselves, and then take a look
at the bibliography for a selection of texts that were use as references
to check information.
I am having problems with getting some elements of the Searches to work, what do I do?
We can gurrantee at about 95% accuracy that things in the browser Firefox will work. If you are using another Browser, first email us and tell us which browser you are using, then try to describe the problem as acurately as possible. If we can reproduce the problem, we will then fix it. But if you want to avoid as many problems as possible, we recommend using Firefox for the Chinese Medicine Database.
Why does my "friends" search box appear at the bottom of the screen?
The screen resolution for the Blogs and Notes have been set to display at 1024 X 768 pixels. This will make everything appear as it should be. If you are not using this display setting, your "friends" box will display underneath your recent notes.
I can't see or take notes, what do I do?
Go to the far right hand of your screen and click on the word preferences, this will take you to a screen that will allow you to choose how you want to sort your notes, whether you want your notes private, public or shared with friends, etc. Select who you want your notes visible to, and you will begin to see either your own notes, or the public's notes.
These note boxes are annoying, can I get rid of them?
Sure, go to the preferences button as described above, and choose the button Hide All Notes. When you click this button it will hide all of the notes. When you want to see notes again, just unclick this button.
